A journalist, called Luiza, visits an old coffee plantation and meets a mysterious Chinese woman who asks Luiza to find her son in China. Luiza doesn′t quite understand at first, but discovers that the woman killed herself 35 years ago, when she was unjustly accused of adultery by her husband. He believed their baby was from another man, so ended up killing his rival and fleeing with the child to China. Luiza finds the woman′s son, and falls in love with him. They have a son together. When the boy is 20 years old, he goes to China to become a monk, but falls in love with a girl married to a drunk and violent Chinese man who owns a porcelain store. Coincidentally, the only employee of this shop is an old Chinese man, who turns out to be the grandfather of the boy. In the end, the old man saves the boy′s life and discovers that both of them have the same birthmark. He accepts his son, father of the boy, and forgives the dead Chinese woman.
